Press Release on Nomination of Fabiana Pierre-Louis, Esq. to the Supreme Court of New Jersey
HALA-NJ ENDORSES AND APPROVES THE HISTORIC NOMINATION OF
FABIANA PIERRE-LOUIS TO SERVE ON THE SUPREME COURT OF NEW JERSEY
For Immediate Release: June 8, 2020
The Haitian American Lawyers Association of New Jersey (HALA-NJ) endorses and approves the historic nomination of Fabiana Pierre-Louis to serve on the Supreme Court of New Jersey. Ms. Pierre-Louis, an alumni of HALA-NJ’s founding board of directors, would be the first African-American woman of Haitian descent to be appointed to the State’s highest Court. Ms. Pierre-Louis is the epitome of excellence, and an amalgamation of the stellar qualities that comprise an exceptional attorney: integrity, wisdom, humility, compassion, intellect, perseverance, and a strong sense of justice.
A child of Haitian immigrants whose parents established roots in the State of New Jersey, Ms. Pierre-Louis, a first-generation American, has been a resident of both Northern and Southern New Jersey. Ms. Pierre-Louis graduated from Rutgers University School of Law in Camden, Magna Cum Laude. She is the first person from her family to attend law school.
Ms. Pierre-Louis clerked for the Honorable John E. Wallace, Jr., who was then an Associate-Justice of the Supreme Court of New Jersey, and the Second African-American to serve on the State’s most distinguished Court. Following her clerkship, Ms. Pierre-Louis joined the prestigious law firm of Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads, as an associate. By 2010, Ms. Pierre-Louis had joined the ranks of the esteemed United States Attorney’s Office (“USAO”) as an Assistant United States Attorney (“AUSA”). Ms. Pierre-Louis served as AUSA in all three vicinages for the District of New Jersey: Newark, Camden, and Trenton. By November 2016, she had risen to the position of Attorney-in-Charge in the Trenton office, and she served the same role in the Camden office by December 2018. Ms. Pierre-Louis served the public sector for almost a decade, ensuring that justice was done.
It was during this time, in the fall of 2012, that Ms. Pierre-Louis was invited to join with other accomplished attorneys to form the founding board of directors of HALA-NJ. Ms. Pierre-Louis served this organization with distinction and assisted HALA-NJ in establishing a presence amongst the various bar associations by servicing her community. Aside from HALA-NJ, Ms. Pierre-Louis also participated in the creation of the Trenton Re-entry Court; she served as a board member of the Rutgers School of Law (Camden) Alumni Association and a trustee of the Association of the Federal Bar of New Jersey. Among other associations, Ms. Pierre-Louis has been an avid member of the Garden State Bar Association of New Jersey and the New Jersey Association of Black Women Lawyers.
As of June 2019, she has returned to the law firm of Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads, as a partner. In 2019, Ms. Fabiana Pierre-Louis was named “Diverse Attorney of the Year” by the New Jersey Law Journal. In 2017, she was a recipient of the Garden State Bar Association Young Lawyer Award. She was also a recipient of the Rutgers Excellence in Alumni Leadership Spirit Award in 2010. Her confirmation to the Supreme Court would represent her career coming full circle from where it started as a clerk with State’s most preeminent judicial body.
Accordingly, it is with great pride that HALA-NJ throws its support behind Ms. Pierre-Louis, as a nominee who would ensure that justice is served efficiently, clearly, and completely to all peoples, from all walks of life. In the midst of all the chaos around the world, it is both encouraging and uplifting to learn that the rule of law and the gears of justice continue to grind on, and have culminated in our esteemed Governor’s nomination of our very own, Ms. Fabiana Pierre Louis to the New Jersey Supreme Court.
The members and officials of HALA-NJ express our deepest gratitude to Governor Phil Murphy for his leadership, wisdom, foresight, and courage in nominating Ms. Pierre-Louis and his continuing efforts to ensure that the Court reflects both the proverbial cream of the intellectual crop and the diversity of this State as to race, ethnicity, and gender. Special thanks are offered to God for developing and refining such a jewel from our community so that her value would shine brightly enough to attract a Supreme Court nomination. Sincere appreciation is extended to Ms. Pierre-Louis’s parents, children, spouse, and family, who have contributed to the development of her character, integrity, and mental acuity. HALA-NJ gives special thanks to Fabiana Pierre-Louis for her continued commitment to the public and to striving for excellence. To quote a Haitian proverb, Merite pa Mande, “those who have merit, have no need to beg.” This proverb has been fulfilled in Ms. Pierre-Louis’ nomination based on the recognition of the immense value she can bring to the State’s highest Court. We look forward to her historic ascension to the Supreme Court and pledge our full support.
